Kitchen Proper opened in 2018 with a simple idea: that a town like Battle Creek deserves a room where the food is actually cooked — by hand, in front of you, with patience — and the people behind the counter know your name by the second visit.

The menu shifts with the seasons because the lake shifts, the orchard shifts, the farmer two highways over shifts. Every plate that leaves our pass starts with a conversation, a delivery, a sauté pan, and ends with the only thing worth chasing: something truly genuine on your fork.

We are a small kitchen. We make a lot of things from scratch — pastas, sauces, pickles, breads. We are not the loudest restaurant in Michigan. We are, on most nights, the warmest one.
